Drayton Dismissed from Temple
Temple Athletic Director Arthur Johnson and Stan Drayton announced in a joint statement that Drayton will no longer be the team’s head coach. Owls’ defensive coordinator Everett Withers, who has head coaching experience at North Carolina, James Madison, and Texas State, will serve as Temple’s head coach for the final two games of the season.
“I appreciate the opportunity that I was given to lead a great group of young men at Temple University,” Drayton said in the statement. “I wish them nothing but the best in football and in life.”
In less than three full seasons on North Broad, Drayton finished with a 9-25 record, including a 4-18 record in American Athletic Conference play. Temple failed to win a road game during Drayton’s tenure.
“With the changing landscape of college football and the playoff format, the opportunity for Temple football has never been greater,” Johnson, who hired Drayton in December of 2021, said. “Our expectation is to compete for American Athletic Conference titles, appear in bowl games consistently, and build a program that our fans, alumni, and students can be proud of in the classroom and on the field. I am confident that our fans will rally around our student-athletes and support them as they always have.”
The Owls will travel to San Antonio to take on UTSA this Saturday at 7 p.m., and the game will be televised live on ESPN2.
