The Owls will kick off the 2021 season against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights in two weeks.
Until then, the team is focused on training camp and nothing else. When Head Coach Rod Carey was asked about what the team’s mindset has been heading into the Rutgers game, he states that the overall mindset leading up to the game has not been declared yet. Right now, they can only focus on making each other better and determine who the “front line guys” will be heading into the season.
Carey’s overall message to the team is that “there are no shortcuts. You have to put in the time, put in the work, and concentrate on what’s in front of you.”
Still being in the midst of training camp, He states that the team is nowhere near ready to play in a game.
The team held a scrimmage on Saturday, and Carey’s word to describe the team’s performance was “sloppy.”
The sole positive He was able to take from the offensive execution was that they managed to keep pushing and eventually score multiple touchdowns in the red zone and overtime situations.
The Owls are also anticipating the return of tight end Darius Pittman who missed much of last season with an ankle injury. Pittman described his current state of mind as “looking toward the future, hopefully no more.”
When asked whether or not he will be 100% recovered from the injury, he stated, “I wouldn’t say 100%, but I’m very close to that. I think I’ll be good. I think I’ll be ok and be able to protect myself.”
Look for Pittman to have an increased role within the offense and finally have a breakout season with his injury history now in the rearview mirror.
