Lana has satisfied her cult audience with the release of her single, “Watercolor Eyes.” Although it was intended to serve as the closing credit song for the recent episode of the HBO series, Euphoria, “Watercolor Eyes” is more than just a component of the show’s soundtrack. This ethereal track can stand on its own as an exemplary new release. Its dream-like charm and harmonies seem like an ode to her previous work, Honeymoon. The lyrics are engulfed with internal thoughts of melancholy reminiscing, coupled with the slow burn of a guitar.
As a viewer of Euphoria ,the lyrics speak volumes to several faulty relationship arcs in the show. The writing portrays a relationship filled with strife and hostility, but just like clockwork, the allure of their partner eventually pulls them back, resulting in yet another release of watercolor eyes. This relationship structure can be seen between Nate and Maddy but is more notably exemplified by the budding romance between Jules and Rue. Further, another Easter egg implying that the song signifies the latter relationship is the continual reference to drugs such as,
“I think that you taste like rock candy/Sweet like beaches, leave me all sandy.”
Rock candy has a double meaning in this line by being a code word for methamphetamines. The series highlights Rue’s constant wrestling with addiction and how Jules deters her progress to recovery. With this additional context, it unveils the song’s many layers.
Teasing this song as a possible glimpse into her next body of work, I am surely looking forward to its release with fans alike.
