Puerto-Rican progressive metal band, MOTHS, graced Philamoca with their
electrifying performance on Wednesday night, August 6th. Following the release of their newest
project on August 1st, the group pursued a short tour around the East Coast and Philly was
on their list (how lucky are we!?).

MOTHS transformed the space with their energetic set! The audience was
captivated by genre-bending guitars, surprising rhythms, and intoxicating melodies. Each
song had its own twists and turns, as the band pulls influence from numerous styles of
rock and metal. The group’s synergy is boldly apparent in their passionate playing and
engaging stage presence. Frontwoman, Mariel Viruet, showcased her extensive vocal
range with entrancing vocals and powerfully impressive screams. While Viruet certainly
has her unique flair, her range is reminiscent of the work of Courtney LaPlante (Spiritbox)
and Tatiana Shmayluk (Jinjer).

The newest project from MOTHS, called Septem, is inspired by the concept of the
‘seven deadly sins’, one for each song on the album. The work is complex, intricate, and
challenging. The album calls the listener to come back time and time again to find
something new within each composition. This group is certainly one to watch as they make
themselves widely heard and known. I look forward to seeing them live again soon when
they inevitably make their way back over to the mainland.
