City Celebrates Women’s History Month
WRITTEN BY: SIENA SOHN
Typically, the third month of the year is known for one thing and one thing only: basketball and all its madness. However, what most people do not know is that March is also a month which places a spotlight on women’s history.
The tradition started over a hundred years ago and eventually was nationally recognized as a holiday after President Jimmy Carter released a proclamation declaring March as Women’s History Month.
Essentially, this month is used to appreciate and reflect on the great accomplishments of influential women from all over the world, such as Rosa Parks, Susan B. Anthony, and Betsy Ross.
Over the course of the month, there are many events held in celebration of women’s history throughout Philadelphia.
National Constitution Center
Located at 525 Arch Street, the National Constitution Center offers exhibits like “Bad Romance: Women’s Suffrage” and a self-guided tour in celebration of women’s history throughout the month of March.
National Liberty Museum
At the National Liberty Museum, visitors are encouraged to show appreciation for influential female role models in his/her life. When visiting this exhibit, be sure to bring a photo of your female role model so that it may be put on display, and best of all, it’s free!
New Century Trust
At this 1307 Locust Street location, New Century Trust will be screening “Miss Representation,” a documentary which diagnoses the lack of representation of powerful females in both society and history. The screening begins at 6 p.m. on March 23 for a $10 admission fee.
