The two wizards that make up indie pop band Sports are back with a new single fit for a ride in space. With this latest track, “Never Know,” Sports continue their formula of doing what they do best: creating surreal and otherworldly bops.
This year the Los Angeles & Norman, Oklahoma based duo of Cale Chronister and Christian Theriot have been dousing fans with new music following their last album from 2018, Everyone’s Invited. They rebranded with a new logo and visual aesthetic, but have still maintained their familiar groovy sound. Starting a slew of singles with the funky “Tell You Something” in May followed by an emotion-laden “Baby Baby” in October, the release of “Never Know” this week may be the crowning jewel of them all.
Lyrically, Chronister’s dreamy vocals paint a story about hesitation and desperation above a cloud of synths and particularly infectious bassline. The music video depicts the members walking through a liquor store behind a chaotic haze of overlaid food illustrations that disappear slowly as the groovy song progresses — until eventually turning all red as the song draws to a close. Former band member, musician Jaco Terio, lent his skills on guitar for the song’s outro. Just last month, Terio released his own folksy debut solo single, “Golden Bells” — another track worth a listen.
Be sure to keep an eye out for the first of two installments of Sports’ upcoming album Get A Good Look Pt. 1, slated for release on February 12, 2021. Take a listen to “Never Know” on Spotify, linked below!
