On Thursday, November 16, 6LACK brought his Since I Have A Lover Tour to The Fillmore in Philadelphia in support of his latest album of the same name. The Atlanta R&B singer and rapper’s third studio album marked his first release in five years, resulting in arguably his best work to date. Since I Have A Lover also recently earned 6LACK a nomination for Best Progressive R&B Album at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
The packed show consisted of an elaborate stage setup, including a row of plants and large LED panels to project visuals. On top of that, the production was completed by colorful lights and plenty of fog machine blasts. 6LACK was backed by an impressive band composed of a drummer, guitarist, DJ, and keyboard player who also skillfully utilized a talk box. The band accentuated the nuanced details of his moody 808-driven beats. It can often be tough for a band to recreate digitized instrumentation, but they made 6LACK’s most energetic tracks more exciting and his slow jams feel more intimate.
The show started with a video montage of 6LACK’s rise to success, with his latest album and tour serving as a victory lap for the singer. He performed a career-spanning set, including his biggest hits, deep cuts and collaborations, as well as the majority of Since I Have A Lover. While on stage, 6LACK both embraced his core fanbase and welcomed new listeners. For new fans, he playfully clarified the pronunciation of his name as he performed “Imported.” 6LACK consistently engaged with the audience, even making sure that fans stayed hydrated on the crowded floor.
With a long setlist and a combination of singing and rapping and rapping, the show was incredibly varied, jumping between a diverse range of emotions. 6LACK managed to maintain a lively energy, even while performing his most melancholic songs. His gruff yet smooth voice sounded almost identical to his recordings as he commanded the audience throughout the show.
With the help of his band, 6LACK breathed new life into his latest tracks and classic hits. He also noted that this month celebrates the 7th anniversary of his debut album, 2016’s FREE 6LACK. He also explained the five year gap between his new album and his last, expressing gratitude to his Philadelphia fans for showing up after all these years.
He ended the night with his biggest hits, including “PRBLMS” and “Pretty Little Fears,” as well as the title track to Since I Have A Lover. With his excellent Philadelphia show, 6LACK is shining brighter than ever on his latest tour.
