Temple Volleyball Reaches Postseason

By: Melissa Payavis

The well has no longer run dry as the Temple volleyball squad has accepted a bid to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. This is the first time the team has appeared in the postseason in 15 years, and the first time under Coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam. This will be their fifth trip to the postseason in program history.

“I’ve never been on a team that won anything, not even in high school, so to be a part of this team that made the postseason and to do it in our senior year and it means so much,” senior Janine Simmons said. “It really means a lot to us that we’ve had a part in elevating this program, and leaving it better than we found it.”

Temple will play Campbell in the first round at West Virginia on Tuesday, November 28 at 4:30 pm. If they continue their success, they’ll be looking to play on Wednesday, November 29 at 6 pm facing the winner of the West Virginia and Maryland Eastern Shore match.

The Owls will follow their last trip to the postseason after advancing to the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA Tournament. The team’s previous run of success lasted three years when they earned NCAA Tournament bids in 1997, 1998, and 1999.

“It’s really great that we’re leaving the program better than when we started, and I’m really excited that this class is leaving our mark on Temple Volleyball,” senior Izzy Rapacz said.

The tournament’s semi-final round is scheduled for December 4-9, with the finals being Tuesday, December 12 at 7pmon ESPN3.
