Last Tuesday, January 28th was Temple Band night at The Fire in Philadelphia. This event was held to showcase some of Temple’s new and upcoming artists. Performers and audience alike were ready to celebrate some of Philly’s new sound.

(Jesse Rahmos)

A Tyler School of Art student, Rahmos is focused on creating a sound and zeroed in on creating an abstract, poetic, spoken word flow. This sound is comparable to Earl Sweatshirt or The Alchemist in between his clever wordplay and his crafted harmony backtracks. Rahmos started his set with his most recent song “All I Have To Be” and ended his song with his first ever released song “Half Mast.” After performing live a little under a dozen times, Rahmos is grateful for each opportunity presented to him to help further his musical experience.

His creativity is sparked by a variety of different aspects. He takes inspiration from people around him, his loved ones, and his own experiences. After a short amount of time developing his sound, enough time had passed where he can hear his own progression

“I listen back to my past songs and it sounds like I was holding my breath…the more you listen you can hear how I get loose with my delivery as time has passed.”

Rahmos expressed his excitement to release more music and perform more in the future;  A new release “Loki” and a show at Philly Style upcoming later this month for Jesse Rahmos.

( Erin Schnider )

Up next was Erin Schnider, a recently signed musician with Bell Tower Music this past fall. For this performance she was accompanied by her recently assembled bandmates “We’re Not Cousins.” Though this band is very newly formed, this was their first official performance together, this is hopefully first of many as they are up and coming, talented individuals.

Schnider’s vocal performance was nothing short of incredible, showcasing her diction and belting ability throughout her performance, covering songs like Redwine Supernova and a set of Phoebe Bridgers singles. Though this was one of the first performances put on by the troop together, their sound is harmonious and completely complementary to each individuals’ talent.

A member of the band, Tommy Cornell, is also a signed artist to Bell Tower music as of Spring 2024, this semester has the opportunity to be a recording artist.

“As a Fox student as much as I love my major it is really nice to have a creative outlet, it’s nice to have my professional goals and then to have my passions as something to fall back on, I am really grateful to Temple for letting me have both.”  Cornell stated.

Cornell is looking forward to working with Schnider and the rest of the band more in addition to creating demos and watching music grow.

Since Schnider’s signing to Bell Tower, she has released her single “Crying on my Birthday.” While the artist’s writing process differs from song to song, she thought this single was unique and quite relatable as a whole.

“I started writing [Crying on my Birthday] when I turned 20, I’m 22 now, coming back to the song a year later to finish it meant a lot. It is made up of pretty simple chords on the guitar. After working on the song for so long it was a lot, but I think in the same way it made it feel a lot more real and special.”

Schnider is planning on releasing more singles this semester and making more music in the future.

( Antique )

From the second Antique stepped on the stage there was energy accompanied with his presence. His ability to interact and engage with the crowd brought excitement to the audience. His performance consisted of original songs like “Chevy Truck” with an electronic house music beat, a performance of a popular song he has “Some Guy at Temple”, and a cover of his personal favorite song “American Car Ride” by Jace Cameron. Antique brought range and refreshing upbeat energy to the stage.

“I got into music in 10th grade. Once I got to Temple I had a space to really work on my music.” said the artist.

The artist explained that there is nothing more exciting to them than seeing their ideas after time spent brainstorming coming to fruition.

“I had always wanted to make a song about Temple, because I spend so much time here, but I never tried to make [Some guy at Temple] on purpose, it just kind of happened. I wanted to make something fun and Philly based, the positive reception to it has been great.” Antique is excited to share that he is working on a new album and he will be releasing new music “soon”.

(Icarus

Wrapping up the night was Icarus, who were just coined winners of this past fall’s Rocktober.

Icarus’s sound starts somewhere between ragged indie punk and flows into harmonic Midwest funk. The band played originals like “Baby Talk” and “Blue”, both have yet to be recorded, but the band is making sure to stock up on new sound beforehand. The band has only been together since the fall, yet their dynamic proves to be tight-knit and passionate about the work they do together.

“It was just Stephen and I for a while, we met Adian and we played a show with the three of us, which was kind of difficult. Once Will came in it was the grease in the gears,” said Jack

Dittbrenner, lead guitarist of the group.  The band has been able to balance student life with musician ambition, “It is a miracle we get together, but we do and we love it.”

Shoutout to WHIP Alumni, Caitlin McGeehan for putting together a great show at The Fire!
