Neon Trees’ Favorite Daze Tour had the honor of coming to the Theatre of Living Arts on September 27th. The band had two opening acts: Silent Rival, from Los Angeles, and Laundry Day, from New York. There were two demographics in the mix of the crowd: those there to see Neon Trees and those there to see LAUNDRY DAY and Neon Trees; I happened to be in the latter demographic.
LAUNDRY DAY is like if Brockhampton were all high school best friends and made some indie-pop music together in their friend’s basement. LAUNDRY DAY is an up-and-coming band in the indie-pop scene, most known for having their hit song, FRIENDS in the Netflix show, On My Block.
LAUNDRY DAY consists of vocalists Sawyer Nunes and Jude Ciulla-Lipkin, guitarist Henry Weingartner, drummer Etai Abramovich, and bassist Henry Pearl. The band was formed in 2018, within a year of meeting each other. All five current members were students at Beacon High School. The group is touring their newly released album, Younger Than I was Before, which came out in early September of this year.
The band started touring in 2017, while still in high school. They started doing small shows for their first album in 2018. The band has had the honor of opening for acts such as Clairo and The 1975, these shows were small sets and for miscellaneous dates. The first time I saw Laundry Day was at Firefly Music Festival, during their small festival run. I had the honor of putting my friends that I went to the music festival with on to Laundry Day, which is special. Last spring, LAUNDRY DAY played at Drexel University’s commencement outside The Philadelphia Art Museum.
Devoted to the motto of “do it yourself,” LAUNDRY DAY brings the energy of local Philly bands and house show bands of Temple. On Tuesday night, they held the same energy and delivered an energetic show. They played a 30-minute set consisting mostly of songs devoted to their latest album, Younger Than I was Before. Although they did not have enough time to play the hits and the hidden gems of previous albums, they still delivered an enthusiastic and great performance. The incorporation of the two different demographics was a great idea. Those there who never heard of LAUNDRY DAY were definitely impressed by their lively performance. The whole band was having a fun time on stage in their school uniforms portraying their New York attitude with deep respect. The whole band plays off of each other smoothly because of their friendship. You could tell they enjoy playing with each other because it’s like they’re just playing in their basement again. They perform for the love of music and for one another, as was obvious Tuesday night.
