Indie music darling, Clairo, took to the stage this past week for a post-Halloween stop in Philadelphia on November 1st. Day one of two in the city of Philadelphia on her Charm tour.
The singer-songwriter played a chilling set, alongside fellow indie dreamgirl, Alice Phoebe Lou. It was a night filled with flirty, soft, velvety tracks.
Fans stood outside on a suspiciously warm fall day for upwards of five hours for a chance to stand at the barricade. The energy was high as fans raced to the front of the venue to catch a glimpse of Alice and Clairo.
The set of the stage mocked a 70’s conversation pit, which transported the audience back in time.
Clairos’ latest album, Charm, draws on melodies of a 1970s jazz album. And she was able to perfectly showcase that in her set, too.
She began the show light and playful, raising a glass with her fellow bandmates, laughing and talking. Audience members stood still, just observing the singers’ movements. You could tell how relaxed and at home she felt on that stage.
The pit was filled with a variety of instruments and a light that shimmered beautifully on them. Suddenly, the members dispersed to their stations, and Clairo stood proudly at the microphone. A large lamp-style light illuminated her, and soon the audience felt at home too.
Clairo opened the set with Nomad, the first song off of Charm. She hypnotized fans with her silky vocals, playing hit after hit. The packed house was taken on a journey of Clairo’s full discography. From her bedroom-pop hits like Flaming Hot Cheetos and Amoeba to jazz melodies like Add Up My Love and Sexy to Someone, each song was an introspective into how far she has come as an artist.
The crowd was enamored when she began to play 4EVER from her popular EP, diary 001 released in 2018. And thousands sang in unison to her hit song Bags off of her 2019 album, Immunity. Old and new fans were reminded of the range Clairo has as an artist.
Clairo finished off her carefully curated setlist with possibly the most popular, sensual song from Charm, Juna. The closing energy Clairo brought made fans feel light on their feet as they swayed in unison to Clairo’s perfect harmonies. Her ability to create such an intimate, personal, environment that is arranged for the driving desires of her fans, is truly what makes Claire Cottrill so different from her Indie-pop peers. Her connection to the audience brings a bright, warm light to her performances.
