The boxes that carry just a little bit more

On Thursday, Nov. 19, the Temple Police Department, under the leadership of Captain Bradley, began their annual Turkey Box food drive.
Temple Police has been hosting this drive for almost 20 years now and has reached out to thousands of needy families in parishes and neighborhoods directly surrounding the university area.
Each box that is assembled contains a 10 lb. turkey, green beans, rolls, sweet potatoes, and – Thanksgiving’s staple treat – a pumpkin pie.
After sending close to 100 boxes out the door to parishes and homes all around the area, I couldn’t help but grasp the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Not only did it feel good to give these boxes to the less fortunate, but it was also reassuring to see the number of students who showed up to the Newman Center to help assemble the charity boxes.
It’s important to realize that the people living in the neighborhoods surrounding Temple’s campus were here before many of the university’s students. Therefore, we must respect and take care of them and their community as best as we can while we are here.
