Police Searching for Information on Laser Pointer Incident
By Dalton Balthaser
Philadelphia, PA- Police are saying that an unidentified Temple University student pointed a laser twice at a Philadelphia police department helicopter, provoking a possible aerial disaster. The student had shined the laser at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday from the top floor of the Morgan Hall North residence-building on Temple’s main campus, Philadelphia police are saying.
Lieutenant David Bonk of the PPD’s aviation unit tweeted a photo of Morgan Hall North at the time of the alleged incident. A red light looks to be shining off of the top of the residence hall. In his tweet, Bonk says that pointing lasers at the helicopter units is illegal.
This is not the first time a Temple student has used a laser to point at a helicopter in the sky. This also happened last year making this the second straight year that this has occurred in the residence hall. Bonk on his Twitter account said that the police department will not be pursuing the alleged individual.
In a memorandum to on-campus Temple students, Michael Scales, Associate Vice President for Student Affairs told the students that use of laser pointers on aircraft could be dangerous for those in the air as well as on the ground.
He would also say in this campus wide e-mail that anyone found responsible could face criminal as well as university penalties.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Temple Police at 215-204-1234.
