The Halloween cover show. One of the most sacred DIY traditions. A scene ritual that occurs every year. Kids all over the city hosting seances in basements, trying to conjure up the spirit of all the great bands that have come before them. While this year we might not be able to cram together for sweaty sets we can still appreciate the sentiment of being anyone you want, even if it’s just for the night.
HINDS COVERS “SWEET THING” BY TWIN PEAKS
Playing a slow stripped down version of the swaggering “Sweet Thing” you can practically see Clay and Carlotta falling in love on stage. Touring with each other extensively in 2018 Hinds and Twin Peaks became inseparable, each leading the garage rock revolution in their respective countries. Swaying on stage their slightly drunk slurring and gritty guitar tones will make you melt.
VUNDABAR COVERS “FAREWELL TRANSMISSION” BY OHIA
Recorded on their porch Brendon Hagan admits to listening to “Farewell Transmission” “about 1,000 times this last year” in the video description. The song’s significance obvious in his delivery, his eyes screwed shut the majority of the time, and the full force of his feelings sprawled across his face. Taking a barebones approach the sparse drumming and raw electric guitar lets the vulnerability of the lyrics shine.
THE FEELIES COVER “I WANNA SLEEP IN YOUR ARMS” BY THE MODERN LOVERS
Tearing through the already anxious love song The Feelies leave The Modern Lovers in their dust. Clocking in at just under 2 minutes it’s impossible to keep up with the jittering riffs and frantic frenzied vocals. Sheer nervous energy it slams as fast as your heart seconds before the “I think I’m in love with you” confessional.
THE BLACK LIPS COVERS “RUN RUN RUN” BY THE VELVET UNDERGROUND
Posing as arguably one of the most iconic rock stars Cole Alexander makes a rough around the edges Lou Reed. Playing the tambourine on top of a snare you can practically hear the angels scream. With the same rowdy elegance of The Velvets, they could rip through any motorcycle bar and rile up any crowd.
ST. VINCENT COVERS “THESE DAYS” BY NICO
With the top Youtube comment being “I didn’t think anyone could sing a sadder version than Nico” Annie Clark breaks your heart with this cover of “These Days.” Accompanied only by her electric guitar the gentle strumming is haunting as she whispers “please don’t confront me with my failures/I have not forgotten them.” Avoiding eye contact with the camera she appears miles away with memories of lovers she’s lost and gambles that didn’t pay off.
